Jose Manuel Martinez Confesses to Killing 40 People

Jose Manuel Martinez

FRESNO, Calif. — Authorities say a man charged with carrying out nine contract killings in Central California has confessed that he actually killed 40 people over several decades.

Jose Manuel Martinez, 51, allegedly told investigators he carried out the crimes working as an enforcer for a drug cartel, said Errek Jett, the district attorney in Lawrence County, Ala. Jett said they believe Martinez because of the details he gave investigators.

Martinez was arrested last year shortly after crossing the border from Mexico into Arizona and sent to Alabama, where he awaits trial on one murder charge. Once word got out, a steady stream of investigators from across the country came to question Martinez, Jett said.

As the details of Friday’s shooting at Los Angeles International Airport are pieced together, a timeline and images are starting to emerge from the rampage that killed one person, and injured several others.

One of these details is the photograph above, of accused gunman Paul Ciancia, after he was shot by Los Angeles Airport police officers. In the picture, is shown lying on the floor of the airport, restrained in handcuffs, with his head resting on what appears to be a Starbucks bag.

According to law enforcement sources, Ciancia was struck in the mouth with a .45 caliber bullet. The shot took out several of Ciancia’s teeth, and split his tongue. Ciancia is currently in critical condition at an LA hospital, and in a non-responsive state.

Ciancia, 23, allegedly shot and killed Gerardo Hernandez, a 39-year-old TSA agent, who was checking travel documents at a terminal checkpoint. Hernandez was struck at point-blank range twice. Once in the initial attack, and again when Ciancia returned to deliver the final shot. In addition to Hernandez, Ciancia’s rampage wounded five people, including two other TSA agents.

Officers from LAs Airport police force shot Ciancia at least four times. On Saturday, federal prosecutors filed charges of murder and commission of violence at an international airport against him. If convicted on the charges, he could receive the death penalty.

Sophisticated drug tunnel busted along US-Mexico border

Originally posted on Global News:

SAN DIEGO – A tunnel designed to smuggle drugs from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego is equipped with electricity, ventilation and a rail system, U.S. authorities said Thursday, making it one of the more sophisticated secret passages discovered along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Authorities seized more than 8 tons of marijuana and 325 pounds of cocaine in connection with the discovery, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said. Three suspects were in U.S. custody.

The tunnel links warehouses in Tijuana and San Diego’s Otay Mesa industrial area. The area is filled with nondescript warehouses, making it easier to conceal trucks being loaded with drugs.

The tunnel was found Wednesday and completed only recently, ICE said. Authorities did not say exactly when it was built or whether drugs are believed to have gotten through undetected.

As U.S. border security has heightened on land, Mexican drug cartels have turned to ultralight aircraft, small fishing…
